SoCreate Screenwriting Software’s Weekly Writing Challenge – Week 14

Are you on the hunt for a catalyst to ignite your imagination and inspire fresh writing? Your quest concludes with SoCreate's weekly writing challenges! Each week, SoCreate presents a fresh writing prompt designed to inspire writers to expand their creative boundaries and delve into new ideas.

This week's challenge takes us to a church with characters Bonnie, Bella, Ward, and Natalie. We're in the front row at the soon-to-be Rothschild wedding of Ward and Natalie. Bella, Natalie's sister, is seated next to their mother, Bonnie, who is crying a river. Bella is doing her utmost to stay composed so as not to make her mother cry even more.

Writing Challenge

  • Setting: INT - Church - Morning

  • Characters: Bonnie; Bella; Ward; Natalie

  • Scene Description: We're witnessing the wedding of Ward and Natalie from the front row. Natalie's sister, Bella, is seated next to their mother, Bonnie, who is crying uncontrollably. Bella is trying to keep her cool so as not to make her mother cry even more.

  • Prompt: Craft a scene where it becomes clear that Bonnie and Bella aren't shedding tears of joy for Natalie's wedding, but are in fact laughing uncontrollably. What is happening in the church (a sound, a smell, a person) that is causing them to burst into laughter, and how do Natalie, the bride, and her soon-to-be husband Ward respond?

Extra Credit: Try using SoCreate's Dialogue Direction feature to specify how your characters deliver their lines of dialogue. For example: Bella might be annoyed as she says something, and Bonnie might start crying. Include these expressions in Dialogue Direction and watch your character's faces change to express the sentiment!
